Type, origin and process of scrap recycling

By definition, scrap is that waste material composed of old metal substances or pieces, especially iron, belonging to various objects, machines or appliances in disuse, which can be recycled. The word scrap comes from the Basque language, "txatarra", which means "the old". There are two main types of scrap metal:

  • Ferrous metal scrap : it comes from iron, steel and other elements.
  • Non-ferrous metal scrap : scrap of other metals, such as aluminium, zinc, copper, magnesium, tin, lead, nickel...
  • scrap of other metals, such as aluminium, zinc, copper, magnesium, tin, lead, nickel...
We find, mainly, three origins that give us an idea of the great importance of scrap within the recycling sector
  • Own : generated in the factory, refinery or smelter and recovered and reused there.
  • Industrial : scraps of scrap derived from waste originated during the elaboration of different products made with metal: household appliances, machinery, automobiles, boats, cans and steel containers...
  • Obsoleto: these are products that are already in disuse. For example, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV).

Thus, the volume of scrap that is generated is enormous and comes from various fields such as those mentioned above. In fact, scrap is the main industry that reuses materials that are not biodegradable. Whether ferrous or non-ferrous, all scrap is reusable and can be very valuable. Not for nothing is the scrap recycling business implanted all over the world. When the objects manufactured with them fall into disuse, steel and iron, as well as the rest of metals, can be recycled again and again, without prejudice to their quality . Smelting in furnaces is usually the final stage of a complex process that will result in a new useful material. This is the sense of scrap recycling: to become, after this process, new products . In this way, it contributes to the conservation of the environment , since less waste is generated, it is consume fewer natural resources and reduce water and air pollution. And in the strictly economic plane , scrap recycling means energy savings, less water consumption and waste of raw materials. These reasons, in view of the evidence that natural resources are limited and the need to save energy and save in the process, highlight the importance of raising awareness, valuing and encouraging the proper recovery of waste materials related to scrap.

Types of Scrap: Management and methodology

Within our products and services, in Derichebourg Spain we take care of the collection of ferrous scrap. To carry out this task, we have a large fleet of specific containers for scrap metal and container trucks, equipped with a crane and means for the removal of these materials, as well as mobile presses to facilitate transport to our facilities. There, we proceed to the classification, homogenization and treatment of these scraps. A national network of shredder plants for treatment and strict control. to ensure the absence of contaminating materials, complete the service we provide with respect to ferrous scrap. As for non-ferrous scrap, metals such as copper, aluminium, brass, lead, bronze, etc. are treated in all Derichebourg Spain centres.  In addition, we work the treatment and smelting of two concrete metals, lead and aluminum, in plants that obtain at the end of the process pure aluminum ingots, or with the alloys requested by our customers on the one hand, and pure lead ingots, work lead and other lead derivatives on the other.

Other products and services that we offer in our different offices include the specific case of the recycling of steel scrap: recovery of this scrap and control of qualities and contents by means of spectrometry devices and highly qualified personnel. We have specialized plants, specific installations for steel fragmentation and automatic oxyfuel plants. Likewise, our Advanced Alloys Unit is made up of a team of specialists in superalloys and special steels. Regarding the recycling of obsolete scrap, we have a specific line of service for recycling Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) with a large amount of means available to our customers. On the other hand, the ecological management of End-of-Life Vehicles (ELV) is carried out in our CAT (Authorised Treatment Centres).
